12 years of Slavery
After 12 YEARs of being kidnaped and enslaved an emotional
and teary Solomon came home to find that life went on without caring about his
situation and condition, upon his return he learned he was a grand Father amongst other
things. As he called his children by their names as a mark of recognition and
remembrance he apologised for showing up.
"I apologise for showing up, it is just that I had bad
experiences for the last few years..."
After all the Evil and the misfortune that has befallen him
he stood in front of his family and took ownership by recognising what his
absence meant and created in his family no matter what was the circumstances.
I went through a lot of emotions throughout this movie at
some point my eyes became watery, apart from economic gains and comforts it was
a black man’s spirit that was under attack, the very same spirit that make
niggers who they really are, their intrinsic collective self that which we call
‘UBUNTU’ the foundation being the understanding that ‘Motho ke Motho ka Batho’.
Solomon said…Master! After we cut these tree stumps we could
tie them up in a format that will float and use this stream to transport them
back to the farm, we would save on costs.
Are you a Nigger or an Engineer? He was asked…
There is a line in the movie where one of his (Solomon)
slave masters said he was one exceptional Nigger, for me it was to reinforce
the stereotypes that although there were some exceptional Niggers like Solomon
the rest were good for picking cotton and cutting sugar canes against their
will and without any financial compensation.
Good performances all round and some good dialogues in
patched. The sound tracks could have been better.
