BREATHE: Tutu Puoane

TUTU PUOANE: BREATHE

A latest offering by a very gifted and talented musician.

I am listening to 'Her Beauty' track 3 for the third time now and i am starting to realise that i have not being BREATHING for some time; i have been inhaling and exhaling air to fill my lungs and keep my physicality alive. '...kea leboga mpho, ke leboga badimo baka...' she sings in some parts of this song, this prompted me to ask myself about this beauty of a gift(life - mpho ya Modimo) we all possess; when we assume our natural positions and become who we were born to be; it allows us and those around us to breathe, to be alive.

Tutu was born to sing, she sings effortlessly and in a controlled and matured way. In this album she has visited her roots singing comfortably and mostly in her mother tongue, her trio band allows her space to BREATHE with amazing solo interpretations. I am not sure how deep they understand the meaning of some of the words but in terms of capturing the soul and spirit of the songs they are spot-on. I have a soft spot for upright bass and Nicolas Thys is just unbelievable in his solo dances with this curvaceous instrument. There is a very intense relationship here between the piano and the leading voice; the chemistry is evident throughout this album, when Ewout Pierreux pushes those black and white keys I just hear that black voice of Tutu coming out in white notes floating against the purple sky, uprooting the ancient baobabs dashing that cream with that marula fruit. It’s not a colour thing! It’s a soulful thing. Lieven Venken has to be the most chilled drummer in the world right now.

I love the live feel of this album, live instrument played by people who BREATHE. Now it’s on track 9 ‘Love ends’ a smooth and a deep song about our thoughts and experiences about love and how it is supposed to last as long as we want it to and it never does…’I never thought our love will end..’she sings!

BREATHE: the last song on the album(track 10)

This song is written by one of our beloved sons, it is evident that through her music Tutu Puoane the daughter of the soil has chosen to remain where her umbilical cord has fallen and became the notes of her song.

“the work of our hands heals and keeps us awake; when light comes, the heart rejoices at the sound of that hope…Lyrics by Neo Muyanga.

E monate ka se ga borena MaAfrika!!!

Rea leboga Ba-Dimo barena ka mpho ya lona; Rea leboga Ba-Dimo barena ka mpho ya lona
